Health and Safety
Health is the foundation of school readiness. In order to help children thrive, Ashland Head Start/ KY State Preschool staff ensure that children are up to date on immunizations and the KY’s Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) schedule, learn healthy habits and can access the care they need. We also promote the physical, social, and emotional well-being of families and staff.
Our program supports mental health for children, families, and staff every day. Early Childhood mental health is the same as social and emotional well-being. It is a child’s developing capacity to express and regulate emotions, form trusting relationships, explore, and learn – all in the cultural context of family and community. The mental health of children and the adults that care for them is essential for school readiness.
Good nutrition is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy foods help children get the nutrients their bodies need to stay healthy, active, and strong. Our Health Coordinator and staff explore and share resources that support healthy eating habits and find nutritional information for our families.
Here at Ashland Head Start and KY State Preschool we require a dental exam. Tooth decay is the most common childhood disease, but it’s preventable. Children with dental pain can have trouble speaking clearly, eating, and learning. Our Health Coordinator can provide resources and help find a dental home for your child and family.
Our program ensures that all our facilities, materials, and equipment are hazard-free and all staff use safety practices including active supervision. Our program works closely with our local police department and school safety team to ensure that all of our school and it’s emergency plans are safe and in place.
