CATS Criteria for Eligibility

3rd Grade:
Students must have a mathematics and science score that averages 7.5 or higher AND a minimum stanine score of 7 in reading. (Scores taken from spring ITBS)


4th Grade:
Student Selection Criteria---Option 1:  Students must have a CogAT stanine score of 8 or 9 AND have an average math and science ITBS scores of 7 or higher.  Option 2:  Students must have a CogAT score of 7 AND have either an 8 or 9 stanine score in both science and mathematics.  (Note:  ITBS Reading and ITBS Social Studies were not used in student selection)


5th Grade:
Student Selection Criteria---Option 1:  Students must have a CogAT or OLSAT stanine score of 8 or 9 AND have an average math and science ITBS scores of 7 or higher.  Option 2:  Students must have a CogAT score of 7 AND have either an 8 or 9 stanine score in both science and mathematics.  (Note:  ITBS Reading and ITBS Social Studies were not used in student selection)  OPTION 3: If the student qualified in a previous grade using OPTION 1 or 2, the student will be granted access for an additional year as space is available for high potential learners. 


6th Grade:

7th Grade:
Student Selection Criteria---Option 1:  Students must have a CogAT/OLSAT stanine score of 8 or 9 AND have an average math and science ITBS scores of 7 or higher.  Option 2:  Students must have a CogAT/OLSAT score of 7 AND have either an 8 or 9 stanine score in both science and mathematics.  (Note:  ITBS Reading and ITBS Social Studies were not used in student selection)  Students must also show evidence in former grades.   OPTION 3: If the student qualified in a previous grade using OPTION 1 or 2, the student will be granted access for an additional year as space is available for high potential learners.


**NOTE:  The selection criteria outlined above is used to determine eligibility within the CATS Program, not gifted identification.   For gifted and talented identification, state regulations are followed to determine qualifying status.  For example, for General Intelligence (GI), a student must have a ninth stanine score on a full comprehensive test of general ability.  In our district, we use the OLSAT and CogAT.  Students must have three pieces of data for the committee to determine GI identification. Students identified GIFTED will have access to CATS 4th-7th Grade.
