Good attendance is important and student achievement is directly related to student attendance. A student isn't going to learn if he/she is not in school. It may sound cliche, but when you miss school, you miss out!
Our school system has support from the judicial system to encourage parents to assure their children are getting to school regularly. The office of the Boyd County Attorney is working with the Ashland Schools to help make sure students are in school every day. Unfortunately, the Boyd County Attorney enters the picture when habitual truancy has already been established. Among the consequences for habitual truancy, parents may be summonsed to court, fined, or incarcerated.
Here in the Ashland Independent School System, we prefer to focus our attention on being proactive rather than reactive. Parents, please continue to encourage and promote good attendance. Besides the obvious benefit of your child receiving an excellent education, you are also instilling in your child a lifelong learning habit that will benefit them throughout adulthood. Please let me know how I can help you make sure your children have great attendance and a wonderful school year.
Remember, when your child has to miss school, make sure he/she has a doctor note or a parent note to turn in the next day. Students are allowed 5 school days to turn in notes. Students are allowed 5 parent notes each year and up to 10 doctor notes.
